Frequently asked questions

Is Personal Edition really free?

Yes. Personal Edition is free, open source under Apache 2.0, and full-featured. You sign in once so we can email you the installer and track aggregate adoption — there is no paywall, trial, or upgrade prompt.

Why do I need to sign in to download?

We use the same checkout flow as a paid product, set to $0, so you receive a download link by email and we can keep a count of who has the software. We do not bill you and we never ask for a card.

Can I review the source code?

Yes. The Terminal and Local Agent are at github.com/netstacks/netstacks-terminal. Build instructions are in the repo (BUILD-LINUX.md, BUILD-MACOS.md, BUILD-WINDOWS.md).

Can I import sessions from other tools?

Yes. One-click import from legacy terminal tools preserves your folder structure and session settings.

What does BYOK mean for AI?

Bring Your Own Key. You use your own API key from Anthropic, OpenAI, or a local Ollama instance. We never see your prompts or store your data.

What does Enterprise add over Personal Edition?

The NetStacks Controller — a server-side platform for teams that adds shared credential vaults, configuration templates, stack deployments, scheduled tasks, RBAC, audit logging, SSO, and the alerts / incidents / profiling-agents plugins. Personal Edition is the right choice for individual engineers; Controller is for organizations that need centralized management.
